welcome To Our Large Building Classroom
-
The Large Classroom Building at the Campbell County Training School was primarily used for educating African American students during segregation. It housed multiple classrooms where students were taught core subjects such as reading, writing, math, and history. The office at the end of the corridor likely served as the principal’s office, managing administrative tasks and student affairs. In addition to academics, the building may have also been used for vocational training in areas like industrial arts, agriculture, or home economics, which were common in Rosenwald-era schools.
The spacious layout suggests it may have hosted community gatherings, presentations, and school events, serving as a central hub for student and community activities. After desegregation, the building was repurposed for Campbell County Public Schools, undergoing some interior modifications, including the addition of wood paneling, drop ceilings, and fluorescent lighting. Despite these changes, the building remains a significant historical site, reflecting the Black community’s dedication to education during a period of limited opportunities.

The Large Classroom Building concepts share a thoughtful design approach, both featuring a daycare and coworking space to address community needs. The layouts utilize the existing wide corridor to separate the daycare from business activities, ensuring each operates independently with dedicated entrances and exits. Material selections are thoughtfully chosen to honor and reflect the architectural heritage of the original Rosenwald School.
